Lead Directors often ask us…
How do we grow the performance and impact of our Board of Directors while recognizing that these are top executives from some of the most influential companies in the world who have seen, done, and achieved it all?
It can be tough to acknowledge when a Board of Directors is full of highly competent and successful people who are not delivering at their collective best. How can you overcome any resistance to feedback you might experience from individual Directors?
Our work with many Boards has yielded these 3 principles:
Human beings seek growth, and when approached with an authentic, non-judgmental invitation to grow, people will move toward it nearly 100% of the time.
Assessment alone rarely moves Board performance. Receiving an individual assessment is like receiving an exam score- it doesn’t help us improve. In fact, it can set us back. It’s what we do with that score, how we bring it to life in our everyday interactions, generation of solutions, applications in tricky or conflict-laden moments that matters. Assessment, then connection to a trusted advisor walking shoulder to shoulder with Directors as they develop new and enhance existing skills, leads to a stronger Director and a stronger Board.
People join Boards for so many reasons- some tied to ego, unfinished career goals, for the love of the work, staying relevant, sharing skills, keeping sharp, etc. Without fail, people who join Boards are seeking connection and meaning, a way to belong to something important alongside peers who share a common interest. A Lead Director or CEO who overlooks this reality misses the opportunity to leverage that ethos and that cultural driver for the benefit of the organization.
Our three-step Board Effectiveness Assessment and Process uses qualitative and quantitative data collection and is designed to survey the current state, assess and develop Directors against recalibrated expectations, and ensure alignment of expectations and contribution.
This process is uniquely developed for public Boards experiencing or preparing for a change in Board composition, executive leadership, or organizational strategy. To learn more, email corey@coreyjamison.com..
