Less Doing, More Being

What are we going to do?

We’re not doing enough!

What is everyone else doing?

If your first sentence as a leader of people about differences, equity, and inclusion include the words “do, doing, or done,” then you’re having the wrong conversation.

Never has it been more true that a series of transactions does not a transformation make.

And, for the people in the back, now is the time for transformation. Transformation is hard work; it’s messy and complex and requires that we go cold turkey on our addiction to silver bullets, low hanging fruit, and quick hits. It requires us to raise to our highest common denominator of listening meets strategy meets continuous improvement.

It’s time to focus on what we’re doing only after a clear and shared alignment about who we are together and who we want to become in one another’s (literal) company.

Instead of focusing on doing, on transactions, we can ask:

  • What have we heard from the people with whom we share a passion and commitment from this company?

  • Are there perspectives we have not heard that need to be incorporated into our deep thinking about the intersection of differences, equity, inclusion, and our mission/strategic priorities?

  • Who are we going to become, together?

  • How are we going to need to evolve to become that group of leaders, that company?

  • How will we interact--what mindsets, behaviors, and actions will guide us as we evolve on this journey?

  • And then… what are the actions that will bring that “becoming” to life?
